Rohana Laing

Stylized representational paintings in water colour and acrylic.
Nanaimo, BC, Canada

1. EARLY STAGE

Rohana is waxing (with 100% beeswax) all areas that have been dyed blue, preparing the batik for the next shade of blue dye-bath, using 100% cotton.

Previous to this stage, all areas that would not have a shade of blue in them, like white, yellow, beige, orange, red, pink, purple and grey, were waxed to resist the blue.

The tool being used is an Indonesian Janting tool, a copper bowl on a bamboo handle. The hot wax is in the deep fryer. Brushes of various sizes are also used to apply wax.
