Rohana’s art career included 10 years as a studio artist producing large batik wall hangings, woodcut and silk-screen prints paintings and drawings. Reproductions of her batik paintings were created with the help of the
Canada Council Explorations grant, and along with the originals, were exhibited and sold internationally.
Rohana taught design, drawing and textile design at Kwantlen College Surrey (near Vancouver) and has led many workshops in batik and textile design in numerous colleges and university art departments across N. America.
A practicing Artist and Art teacher since graduating from the Vancouver School of Art in 1964, Rohana served as a United Church minister from 1988-2003.
She
travelled the world for the International Subud Spiritual Association and
retired early to return to her former art career
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
In creating art I seek out the shapes, patterns, lines, colours, values, textures and forms that fascinate me. Although my art is representational, my intention is more to celebrate the elements of two dimensional design than to create a photographic representation of what I see.
I paint on location because I value the direct interaction between seeing and painting. When I
work in the studio I work from paintings and photographs done on location so
I can maintain my relationship with the subject There is a magical relationship between the subject, the eye, the hand, and the paper. I hope that when people see my painting they become part of that relationship. It is an expression of my belief that we are all One, all interconnected by the Spirit of Life.
